I have recently worked on a job with a guy who has refused to do certain stuff on the ropes which has resulted in either A. My work load doubling or B. The L3 getting on the other set an pitching in not that he should have to when the other guy is getting paid to be there.
Basically I've heard all sorts of stuff from him over the job with various 'old' an new injuries being used as excuses as to why he can't do it an I've had enough of this sh**. I'll do the extra graft so that the job gets done an everyone stays happy an gets paid etc, but why is he getting paid/employed as a rope/inspection tech if he can't do it.
It's not the first guy that I've heard of whithin the company being like this either theres guys scared of hieghts that have refused stuff as well leaving others to pick up thier side of the work load and after speaking to the L3 he has told me about a job with another company where he encountered a similar situation.
I want other peoples opinions on this but personally I think it's wrong.
If you have a fear of hieghts or an injury that doesn't allow you to do the sort of work your going to be doing on the ropes then in my opinion you've picked the wrong proffesion an it's a blatant scam 'oh I heard you can get heaps of money doing this job my mate used to do/does he says it's easy i'll just go an do a few inspection tickets then a rope ticket on top an i'll be guaranteed work' Well you can have all the inspection tickets you want but if you can't get to the area you've got to inspect then your no much use to anyone!
I've seen so many posts on here saying about how the industry is flooded the rates have dropped etc an I think this is maybe a contributing factor.
I know some people have got to pay the bills somehow but when your taking the position up that someone who could actually do the job could have your a f***ing charlatan and I seriously hope that whoever is on the job with you flags this up to whoever deals with the recruitment/personnel for the said company then maybe a few more doors would open up for people that are interested and able.

I fully sympothise mate. I've worked with some lads who are scared of their own shadow let alone the height issue. the very thing that concerns me is how can you rely on people like this in a three man team to assist, or even execute a rescue if they're not confident on the ropes or aid climbing. I was in the Royal Fleet Auxillory for eleven years and able seaman would refuse to 'go aloft' due to the fact they were afraid of heights!!!! Read the footnotes first boys before you crack on with the getting the tickets.
