Insiders Guide to the Freelance Career

Advice on how to make a freelance careerwor.k for you

How many of you out there are unhappy in your job?, do you ever wish that you could just get up and walk out of your present job? You are NOT alone! There are MILLIONS of people out there who would do the same thing. Why don't they? …read on! The most likely reason for people to become rooted to the same old job is because of the need for "security". It's a good enough reason, almost everyone has responsibilities, children, houses, debt etc etc etc…..But is it a good reason for wasting your time with a job that does nothing for the imagination or a job that pays "bread-line" money? Some people, the lucky few, have jobs that they would do for nothing. The rest of us have different options (we think!). The ONLY options which we think are available are similar to these: * Just bite the bullet and carry on, it may get better in a couple of months/years/decades * Leave my job and take the risk of lifelong unemployment * "Keep my eyes open" for another job * If I complain enough to my boss, things might change Not many good options amongst those was there? The vast majority of people don't realise that there are a lot more options out there than you might think. Ask anyone you know who is about to be made redundant and they will tell you that the biggest fear they have is having the feeling that they are going to be "left alone" once their employer ends the contract. Most people become SO used to being in the same job, meeting the same people, having the same old discussion once a year with the boss (What is it Smith? Begging for a pay rise again?) that they begin to feel that they were BORN into the company. The grass literally starts growing from under their feet! What I am trying to say here is that it's very easy to become blinkered into thinking that the "real world" doesn't exist outside the walls of your company. Nearly everyone needs to work for a living, the reason YOU work is to earn money, that money helps to provide you with certain levels of comfort/satisfaction/lifestyle etc. If you need to work to provide for all of this, surely it makes sense to try your best to make sure that when you work, you are rewarded to the fullest. Does it not make sense to receive the HIGHEST wage that you can get? If you work for the same company for 30 years how do you know how high up the particular pay scale you are? Tip: == Look out a list of ALL the companies that carry out your particular kind of work, note their contact addresses/fax numbers or email address. Write out a blanket letter and make a dozen copies of it. (You may have to "disguise" the truth a little for this next bit!) Send all the companies the same letter/email, in it, you will need to mention that you are thinking about entering their line of business and would appreciate it if they could give you some idea as to what salaries are being offered for whichever discipline you are interested in. If they are worth their salt, they will realise your keenness (thinking you are "new" to the scene) and send you the details you requested. Once the replies arrive, compare YOUR wages to the ones mentioned in the letters. Do they match up?...or are you earning less? Hint: === Make a list of the qualities which you think benefit your company the most, attach them to copies of your letters, then waltz into your bosses office and ask for a rise! If he knows that company B are paying 10% more than him, he will realise that if you leave and go to work for them he will NEVER be able to replace you.....If you even remotely think you are underpaid, try this out.
